Serum C works wonders, but it doesn’t play nicely with other active skincare ingredients. Give it time alone to do its job and create a glaze on your skin. You’ll know when it’s time to move on, because Serum C will no longer feel slippery to the touch. I like to wait the full 10 minutes. I make a cup of tea, and get my clothes ready for the day. It helps with everything that I am currently looking for from my skin care right now, and I’m not going too  lie I kind of stopped using my ZIIP for no other reason then I’m just so busy and tired at night doing the entire skin routine plus the skin would be like 20 minutes which really isn’t that bad if you think about for skin that’s well, perfect. I need to get back to that for sure.

Smashbox works exclusively with Sephora to create the Smashbox MASTER CLASS palette which is a book pretty much filled with instructions and pro tips and on trend makeup – if you were to find a get each  MASTER CLASS that Smashbox has come out with over the years – I believe based on the season and just used those for your makeup kit, you’d have the perfect kit down pat. 

This class teaches you about lighting and correcting – a face palette to create an even complexion, add depth and dimension, cast a high glow, and achieve eye looks for any occasion. You will get sixteen (16) eyeshadows • three (3) blush • four (4) color correctors • three (3) contour products • three (3) highlighters plus you get some get the look inserts! Smashbox never really gives you a product without details on how to use it properly. 

This palette has everything you need to create pro makeup looks with a perfectly lit glow. Become a master at lighting with this palette for looks that flatter in any light. I do love Smashbox color correctors in the stick form so when I received  this the cream color correctors really took be by surprise! I was not expecting them to be so smooth and pigmented like the original products – they blended with ease and do exactly what they claim to do ➡️ if you are new to color correcting, the inserts are their to guide you in the right direction or check the link below for my color correcting post! 

The cream contours in this palette are also very smooth and blendable. I was really happy that the contour shade is dark enough for women of color and the bronzer can be used to bronze or to contour. 

PRO TIP ➡️ use the highlight shade in conjunction with your concealer to get the perfect highlighter for your skin tone. 

A lot of people said that they wish that Smashbox would make the palette a little smaller but maybe they are not getting the idea of MASTER CLASS it’s meant to be almost like book you would grab to learn, you can stick them on your shelf and each one looks different closed so they would look pretty cool all sitting together and you can just grab the one that you’d like to use. 


You can’t deny that this palette is jammed packed full of colour choice and deadly pigment but my favourites would have to be the color correctors! this would make a really great gift for someone who is just starting with makeup for sure, it’s almost mistake proof in so many ways. 

I know, I’ve said it before but SMASHBOX is the only company that developes their product inside smashbox studios so it’s created and tested under the strictest control to make sure that you get a product that is going to work for you. I haven’t spoke to many people who do not love Smashbox as a brand and doesn’t love them as a global company either.

SUMMER SKIN | SMASHBOX COSMETICS – CONCEAL AND FIX 

I actually used to be very very close with one of the top dogs at smashbox studios in LA – we would talk constantly and I was invited to smashbox a number of times and when they did a like nation wide smashbox beauty show just introducing new products and talking about the brand when they came to Toronto we met for drinks and had a lot of fun but as I would be sent huge shipments of smashbox products to use on set, review and use I started to find that not all of the products were as good as I thought they were looking back – in fact I voiced my concern for some of the products and was told to my phone (via the phone) they were aware of the same issues and these products would be discontinued so I continued to support and love the brand, I think it’s because smashbox cosmetics was one of the first brands that I really fell in love with back in the MySpace days and the first brand I reached out to to help me product on set. 

Now I’m not hating on smashbox at all smashbox was bought out by Esteé in early July 2010 and sold for between two hundred (200) million and three hundred (300) million but smashbox pulls in about eighty (80) million in wholesale revenue and one hundred and forty (140) million in retail sales. I still do love smashbox but it is limited things that I will use on set and I will warn a lot that if you are fair – light be prepared for the color you see to not be the color you walk out of the house with. They sadly do oxidize and turn orange

They are still a top dog in the eyeshadow palettes and collections departments – killing it with sales and paying their influencers very well. Please note ➡️ all products mentioned have been sent to me for opinion good or bad.  

SMASHBOX 24 HOUR CC SPOT CONCEALER (said to be discontinued) and I’m noticing on the website and in stores whatever is sold out is not being restocked so maybe that is happening. This was my all time favourite concealer I would write about it all the time because this 24-hour, waterproof concealer was created in the L.A. photo studio to instantly cover dark spots, sun spots and post-acne marks while fading the look of them in as little as 4 weeks. You’re basically concealing and treating all at once, which means it covered red spots and imperfections BUT would oxidize so fast and I’m talking the shade fair so the lightest it went and it was very noticeable to everyone but I loved it and it was new and I had it before anyone else so I thought it was amazing. If anyone remembers last summer – my 2016 summer skin favourites (2017 coming soon) it was always talked about! 

SIDE NOTE ➡️ smashbox also only came out with seven (7) shades that really didn’t match very many, maybe it was due to the concealer and the way it mixed with the heat and oils of the skin – I’m not sure. Sadly though it faded out of my mind. I also remember every time you would close the product more then you would use one your face would come out as you close it so it was also wasteful good thing I have one hundred and fifty (150) of them.

Forget about midday touch-ups or makeup fatigue and for the most part what I’m saying here is completely true but it is not 24-hour wear at all. Again why only 10 shades.. 


It is formulated without Parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Phthalates, Oil, Fragrance & Talc. All of smashbox is cruelty-free

There is also all kinds of people with all kinds of skin concerns and needs while yes I have a bit of discolouration under the eyes and it covered it well – a client who had really bad dark circles it didn’t work so well on. 

➡️ to me this concealer is A LOT like the KAT VON D LOCKIT concealer.

APRIL FAVOURITES – 2017 

Well it’s better late then never but to be honest this favourites isn’t going to be much because there has only been a couple of products that I have personally be loving. 

1 | APPLE WATCH – series two (2) 

To me the Apple Watch ⌚️ was just want-to-have and now it’s need-to-have to keep with with messages, calls and emails and everything else in between. I actually had a crazy night and lost my Apple Watch (yes I know) but reordered a new one the next morning – and man did I see a difference in my social life. I allow myself to now be consumed by work and new opportunities – plus I’m always out and trying to make life better for myself and those around me but without my phone around my wrist pretty much – it’s like I fell off the planet for two days. The Series 2 is, as promised, water-resistant up to 50 meters which is nice for when it’s raining and I won’t lie sometimes I even wear it into the show – it’s the appropriate wrist band of course. So far I have about seven (7) for all different occasions. Right now my favourite one was a gift was someone pretty special in my life which is dual chrome and very me. 

To Apple Watch just fits me, and my lifestyle I know a lot of people say that it’s not worth it but those people have not felt the power and elegance of the Watch around their wrist. 

2 | KAT VON D – LOCKIT concealer 

I love the coverage and finish that this concealer gives. It blends out well and does not emphasize any dry areas. It also lasts all day and doesn’t crease under the eye area – it’s also full coverage with a sheer coverage feel which is really good. Perfect if you have oily skin also. 

Seems to be really all you need for summer skin so that you’re not wearing a mask because come on. It’s summer, let your skin breath! 

3 | MARC JACOBS BEAUTY – PERFECTION POWDER FOUNDATION 

So I will start off saying this is not the product to purchase if you’re on a budget it is a little more on the luxury side and expensive side but with that said you do get a lot of product, amazing product, beautiful packaging and compact case with a separate area for the touch up sponge which is double side – and I would recommend using the sponge and not rub the product into the skin but press it. It is cruelty free and not tested in animals which is always a huge plus in my eyes – it also gives the skin back a beautiful glow while staying matte and MARC JACOBS did design this product actually with men in mind meaning it has an ingredient to work with testosterone.

Five (5) COSMETIC / BEAUTY companies to watch in 2017 

So it would seem the last few years have seen an upswing in financing for beauty startups, with funding rounds steadily increasing since 2012

By last September, various new beauty companies and blogs had already snagged more than 74 rounds of funding in 2016, according to CB Insights, which predicted the industry was on track to clock $424 million in financing during 2016 and a record number of funding deals. 

DID YOU KNOW ➡️ MAKEUPANDTHECITY started with glazed eyes as a relationship of mine came to an end – as he was leaving and in the days to come I poured myself into an outlet for frustration, happiness, lost feelings and colours. 

As investors have helped fuel its growth, the beauty sector has become more personal and accessible. On one hand, there’s the pared-down aesthetic of companies like Glossier, which offers a basic lineup of beauty and skincare necessities, or Milk, which takes a no-fuss, one-swipe approach to its pigmented eye and lip products. Then there are the companies democratizing beauty and catering to consumers who wish to customize, say, their foundation or shampoo, rather than relying on products stocked by mainstream brands. Here are some of the beauty startups that a lot of you might not have known about (or) didn’t know were taking the beauty market by storm. 

1 | GLOSSIER

• helmed by Into the Gloss founder Emily Weiss, Glossier made its debut in 2014 as an extension of the blog that also inspired its name. Glossier has since amassed a legion of loyal followers – in no small part due to the popularity of Into the Gloss – and most recently, picked up $24 million in Series B funding. (to those who aren’t well versed in the field of entrepreneurship and early stage investing, Series A, Series B, and Series C might seem like confusing terms. Fortunately, the terms are easy to understand. Series A, B, and C have nothing to do with the alphabet, rather with the development stage of the companies that are raising capital) the company plans to use that money to introduce international shipping and release new products Glossier fans have been clamoring for, like sunscreen and a heavy-duty moisturizer

2 | MILK MAKEUP

• Milk Makeup is Glossier’s more colorful cousin. Launched in February 2016 by the minds behind the creative agency Milk Studios, the line has a similar minimalist approach to its branding and collection. As with Glossier, Milk products don’t require application brushes, though they are splashier and far more varied, especially in terms of eye and lip products. As of now Milk Makeup is only I believe an 85 piece line and FUN FACT did you know that their oil-sheets can double as a rolling paper.  


3 | MEMEBOX

With $160 million in total funding, Korean beauty box company Memebox has topped even Ipsy, which led the well-heeled beauty box space until Memebox closed a $60 million funding round in December. The Y Combinator-backed startup exclusively features Korean beauty products and has, in part, capitalized on the rising popularity of K-beauty abroad (though Korea still leads Memebox sales). Memebox may have started out as a beauty box service, but the company has expanded to boast a thriving online store and brick-and-mortar presence, with annual sales of more than $100 million. A beauty box is typically a subscription where you are sent monthly or even every six (6) months full of on trend makeup and makeup accessories. 

4 | SEED BEAUTY

Chances are, you’ve heard of at least one (1) of the two (2) brands incubated by the Los Angeles-based company Seed Beauty: cult beauty brand Colourpop and Kylie Cosmetics, the eponymous line started by the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Colourpop first appeared on the scene in 2014 and made its mark by courting prominent beauty bloggers and jumping on the liquid lipstick bandwagon.  (which is now a dying trend or going back to what it was before always there and popular but not so over produced) The brand’s rock-bottom prices certainly helped, too – most products range from $5 to $8 as did the rate at which Colourpop managed to churn out new lip and eye products.

Seed Beauty grew out of a family-owned manufacturing lab that created products for major brands, which explains why Colourpop can conceive of and launch new products in just days. Coupled with the added success of Kylie Cosmetics, whose new product releases continue to sell out within minutesthis is one to watch, especially since Seed Beauty claims to be working on new brands.



5 | MATCHCO

• Though a number of brands have expanded their shade ranges in recent years, few have offered full customization as an option. Enter MatchCo, a beauty startup whose iPhone app can scan your skin and create a foundation specific to your skin tone for $49. This means MatchCo, which launched in January last year, mixes up a foundation exclusively for you, rather than matching your skin to an existing range of shades. As of last October, MatchCo’s app had been downloaded more than 100,000 times, and the service has found an unexpected user base in women who are in their 40s and older. 

SIDE NOTE ➡️ Lancôme was the first to offer a service like this (I personally experienced what they literally call an experience) you get a full consultation, skin mapping and scanning then watch as the foundation is made to your exact skin tone – scanned by a tone detector – with a unique barcode that fits only your shade to repurchase FOR close to the same as MATCHCO (see below for blog post)
